Looking For A Lighthouse? Here’s Your Chance.

The U.S. General Services Administration is handling the auction sale of the Gravelly Shoals Lighthouse, which is currently property of the U.S. Coast Guard.

Lisa Tangney of the GSA said the lighthouse is generally not relied upon for navigation with advancements in technology and is considered excess property by the Coast Guard.

“With modern technology and GPS systems, it’s pretty much the way the direction is going with navigation on the water, so they don’t need the actual lighthouse anymore,” she said.

point lookout, augres miAccording to information in the GSA’s invitation to bid on the property, the lighthouse has to be sold to a nonprofit organization. Tangney said that is not GSA or Coast Guard policy, but state policy.

The invitation to bid says the Coast Guard would retain the right to use, repair or maintain the lighthouse. It says the buyer must also keep the lighthouse up to the recommended approaches in The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties, Standards for Preservation.

Tangney said lighthouses are often sought after by historical preservation organizations, and that the structures are popular in Michigan.

“There is a big lighthouse following among people and historic groups in Michigan and across the nation,” she said. “The state of Michigan holds, I think every other year now, a lighthouse conference. This light is historic, so whoever buys it has to accept in the deed the historic preservation covenants.”

The lighthouse tower is 65 feet tall with a surrounding deck. It is five miles off the shore of Au Gres Township.

The minimum bid is $5,000. Tangney said the auction began June 30 and as of July 17, there had been no bids submitted on the property.

Tips For Staging a Vacation Rental Property

Found this in the RealtorMag from the week of 04/07/14, 3 Tips For Staging a Vacation Rental Property, very simple…

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about getting those cabin rentals, lake homes, and beachfront condos ready for vacationers. Here are three staging tips for the rental properties you own or manage that will help vacationers feel like they’re at their home away from home.

1. Hire a professional cleaning crew to make sure the rental is spotless. The last thing renters want to see when they walk into a property is evidence of other renters before them. Pay special attention to the kitchen (including the refrigerator) and 3 tips for stagingbathrooms. Make sure all the linens and furniture are clean, too. Also make sure the outside of the property looks clean and appealing.

2. Scent is important. If the rental is clean, this shouldn’t be a problem but it doesn’t hurt to put out some extra fragrance throughout the property such as scented oils in a refreshing scent. For the best results, choose a scent that is clean and natural.

3. Offer extra amenities, regardless of how small, to really set your rental apart. Take a page from hotels and include things such as white bath robes, a selection of books for light reading, and stationary.

East Tawas MI, Birding Festival

A migration of not only birds, but birders, will be coming to Iosco County this weekend for the 2013 Tawas Point Birding Festival, which officially starts Thursday, May 16, and concludes on Sunday, May 19, with a few “early bird” events scheduled for Wednesday.

The festival, created in 2006, features birding field trips to different locations birdingaround the county and region, led by birding experts. There is also a variety of seminars being presented over a five-day period, according to a local organizer.

The annual event is sponsored by Michigan Audubon and organized locally by AuSable Valley Audubon.

There is a reason Tawas Point is a popular location for birds in spring and the people who want to see them.

Numerous bird species, making the annual spring migration north, are “funneled” into Tawas Point as they follow the shoreline of Lake Huron. This allows many different species to be viewed from a single location.

AuGres MI, Holiday Festivities

Residents of AuGres have a weekend of tree lighting ceremonies and holiday festivities to look forward to. The annual AuGres Chamber Tree Lighting and Parade of Lights will be held Saturday the 26th after a number of holiday festivities throughout the day.

At 3:00 pm, free carriage rides will be offered at the AuGres-Sims High School courtesy of the Royal Carriage Company. The rides are new this year and will last about 20 minutes, going along Michigan Avenue.

At 5:30 pm, caroling at the corner of US-23 and Michigan Avenue will begin, followed by the tree lighting ceremony at the same intersection.

Afterwards, the parade will move from the tree lighting to the city pavilion on North Main St, where AuGres city firefighters will be providing hot cocoa and H & H Bakery will offer donut holes.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will meet the crowd at the pavilion after a carriage takes them through the parade, drawings will be held to provide hams and nuts for adults and board games and video rentals for children.

The AuGres Chamber of Commerce is the sponsor for this year’s event.
